Massachusetts Equipment Rebates Have Expired – But You Can Still Save Big!
Date: September 16, 2019
In the last three years, more than 4,000 Massachusetts homeowners have received rebates to help them upgrade to higher-efficiency furnaces and boilers or to upgrade to new storage tanks. While the 2019 equipment rebate program funds have been exhausted – we do anticipate more funds being available in 2020 – you can still save big when you upgrade to a new, high-efficiency heating oil system.
In fact, the savings that most homeowners will realize when they upgrade far outpace the value of the available rebates. A homeowner who is spending $2,500 each winter, can expect to save anywhere from $400 to $1,000 per year, depending on the efficiency levels of their current system. That’s some huge savings!

Other tips to save you money during the heating season in Massachusetts
Like it or not, fall is nearly upon us—and with it, of course, comes the home heating season. Now is a great time to get a jump on tasks that will bring some savings in the months ahead. Here are six suggestions:
Winterize windows with weather-stripping (for movable joints) and caulk (for nonmoving parts). Also, use a window kit to insulate the inside of your windows to keep cold air out and warm air in.
Check the air filter in your oil furnace about once a month and clean or change it when necessary.
Keep vents (or baseboards) clear of rugs and furniture so you don’t block your heat.
Use ventilating fans in your kitchen, bath and other rooms wisely; in just one hour, these fans can pull out a houseful of warmed air. Turn fans off as soon as they have done the job.
Run your ceiling fans in reverse. Warm air rises, so reversing your ceiling fans will push the warm air down. This will keep your rooms more comfortable and will reduce your energy usage a bit, too.
Install a smart programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to set your temperatures so that you aren’t wasting energy when you aren’t home or when you’re asleep. Today’s smart thermostats can be controlled remotely, giving you greater control over your energy usage. This relatively inexpensive investment can potentially cut your energy usage by at least 5%—sometimes by even more!
