The Bay State has a long history of revolutionary thinking. And Massachusetts’ Clean Energy and Climate Plan follows this tradition because it is the most aggressive energy efficiency program in the country. The heating oil industry is playing a critical role as part of the plan to make a clean and green future a reality for homeowners all across our state.
The advent of Bioheat® fuel, which is a blend of heating oil and biofuels made from renewable sources, is just the beginning. The goal is to transition to a blend of B50, which is 50% biofuel and 50% heating oil, by 2030. This high blend of Bioheat will continue to reduce emissions, improve system efficiency and push us closer to realizing a carbon-neutral future. Not to mention that half of our fuel will be completely renewable!
The B50 goal is not an end goal, but rather a step on the journey to a wholly sustainable future.
“Renewable heating oil is not a pipe dream,” says John Huber, president of the National Oilheat Research Alliance. “In the coming years, we will be within reach of a fully renewable product available to homeowners.”

The energy landscape can be a complicated one, filled with rules and regulations that can make the most seasoned energy expert ask for help. We’re happy to share one of the most exciting new “rules” with you – the introduction of the Alternative Energy Credit (AEC) Program.
Because heating oil has been reformulated as Bioheat, it is now considered an alternative energy in Massachusetts. Heating oil companies are eligible to receive AECs if they deliver Bioheat at a 10% blend level or more.
There are many benefits to Massachusetts homeowners. For starters, the AECs will make it more likely that more heating oil companies will deliver higher blends of Bioheat, which is a direct benefit to customers. Secondly, the AECs will allow dealers to control their costs, and help to keep energy prices lower than they would have otherwise.
The new AEC “rule”, which expands Bioheat use while helping to keep prices lower, is a win-win situation!
